Morning

Nothing happens
before midnight.
The barricades
come down.
Deer fill the alleys.
Birds fly from tower
to tower.
This’s what cities
are for,
for bear, cougars,
porcupine:
it’s all too late
to be seen
if you don’t stay
up and go out
where the life is.
That way you know
creatures who live
inside you
come out at midnight.
